Brampton – Remy Fernandes, President and CEO of Hydro One Brampton, recently presented a donation of $7,500 to Peel Children’s Centre.
The donation is part of the proceeds of Hydro One Brampton’s 7th Annual Charity Golf Tournament. The tournament has also supported the Family Life Resource Centre, Knight’s Table, Wellspring Chinguacousy and William Osler Health Centre.
“Hydro One Brampton is pleased to support Peel Children’s Centre, a fully accredited community agency that is committed to providing effective, high-quality mental health services that meet the needs of Brampton families,” said Fernandes.
Humphrey Mitchell accepted the cheque on behalf of Peel Children’s Centre. “Thank you for this generous gift, which will help us serve more children and youth who are experiencing serious difficulties with their feelings, behaviour or relationships,” said Mitchell, the Centre’s Executive Director.
Mitchell noted that Brampton is one of Canada’s fastest growing communities, and with this growth has come an escalating need for children’s mental health services.
“We know that 1 in 5 young people will have a mental health difficulty in their lifetime,” he said. “In Brampton alone, that’s about 25,000 children and youth under age 19 who may need our help. This donation will help bridge the gap between government funding and the growing cost of providing children’s mental health services for our community.”
Mitchell encouraged families to seek help early if their children are experiencing problems such as anxiety, depression, behavioural challenges, self-harm, or learning disabilities (e.g. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). “The earlier that children and youth get help, the more likely they are to have a successful treatment outcome,” Mitchell said.
Peel Children’s Centre offers a continuum of services ranging from individual and group counselling to community outreach, day treatment in schools, intensive treatment in residential settings, and specialized services such as its Sexual Abuse Treatment Program. The Centre’s services are free of charge to residents of Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga.
Families can call Mental Health Services for Children and Youth at 905-451-4655 to access services. Children, youth and families experiencing a mental health crisis should call the 24/7 Crisis Response Service at 416-410-8615. Visit www.peelcc.org for more information.
