Winner of PCC’s Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award

Mississauga – Peel Children’s Centre (PCC) will present its Ron Lenyk Volunteer of the Year Award to Marell Tomeh on October 27 at PCC’s annual Celebration Day, an event dedicated to recognizing the achievements of its staff and volunteers.

Marell’s relationship with PCC began in 2014, when she and her sister, Marla, and best friend, Paulina, became involved in the volunteer mentor program, which matches trained volunteers with children or youth who are experiencing mental health challenges. Marell, who had been diagnosed with cancer at the age of 19, was undergoing treatment and felt she had lost a part of herself in the process. She was encouraged by her sister and friend to try volunteering, in the hopes that giving back to others would lift her own spirits, too.

“Marell, supported by Marla and Paulina, became an amazing role model to her mentee,” says PCC’s Volunteer Coordinator Linda Buchanan, who matched Marell with a young girl who had faced health challenges of her own. “Her positive energy, big smile, and genuine compassion made a tremendous difference in her mentee’s life. Marell truly embodies the spirit of PCC’s motto, ‘It’s About Hope’.”

“Individuals like Marell are instrumental to the work we do,” says PCC CEO Humphrey Mitchell. “Our volunteers are the heart of our organization, and they exemplify our Vision of A Caring Community Working Together for Children and Youth.”

Each year, more than 120 volunteers support PCC as mentors, tutors, respite providers, childcare workers, drivers, fundraising assistants and members of PCC’s Board of Directors.

Peel Children’s Centre dedicated its volunteer award to Ron Lenyk in 2008 in recognition of Ron’s leadership as a volunteer, philanthropist and advocate. Formerly Chief Executive Officer of Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre and Publisher of The Mississauga News, Ron passed away unexpectedly in September 2015. He was a generous supporter of numerous health, social service, sports and cultural charities. A portion of PCC’s Celebration Day proceedings will be dedicated to remembering Ron and paying tribute to his dedication to the children, youth and families PCC serves.
