Peel Children’s Centre/Nexus Youth Services is looking for committed and passionate Master’s of Social Work students with an interest in mental health to provide services to children and youth in our Counselling, School Based Services, and Nexus Community Counselling Programs.

As a student completing placement with in our programs in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon, you will play an important role in the implementation of treatment plans while ensuring the safety and well-being of all clients.
Please note, this is an unpaid internship/placement that will commence in Fall 2019. All successful candidates must provide a satisfactory vulnerable sector police records check and reference check prior to the commencement of placement. In addition, all students must participate in a mandatory orientation to the program.

Student Expectations
  • Attend all field related seminars and orientation program(s).
  • Communicate concerns to Manager and/or Field Instructor.
  • Be available for supervision.
  • Advise the Manager and/or Field Instructor of illness and/or other factors that interferes with the placement within a reasonable period of time with the understanding that attendance is critical for successful completion of field placement.
  • Complete a learning contract in consultation with and approval from Manager and/or Field Instructor.

Skills and Qualifications
  • Currently in the second year of a Master’s of Social Work degree
  • Have had a minimum of one previous placement(s);
  • Knowledge of mental health issues and the ability to apply informal counselling, mentoring skills to children and youth.
  • Above average interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proven ability to use tact and judgment in a respectful manner
  • Excellent organization and report writing skills.
  • Adhere to the relevant confidentiality and privacy legislation
  • Possess a proven ability to develop positive relationships with youth, guardians and other professionals.
  • Possess knowledge and skills to work with culturally diverse populations and staff teams
  • Ability to learn as a part of a multi-disciplinary team and the ability to work collaboratively under the guidance of a Supervisor and/or Field Instructor.
  • Computer literacy skills to use word processing, excel, Internet and email software.
  • Access to reliable transportation to fulfil commitment as a Student with the program.
